REQUEST FORM

Resources on the IBM, SGI, Linux Cluster, and Unisys ES7000 supercomputers

Starting a supercomputing resource research project

The form for requesting IBM (SP and Power4), Netfinity Linux Cluster, SGI Altix and/or Unisys ES7000 supercomputing resource allocations is available in PDF and RTF formats or by contacting Barbara Opal, the Supercomputing Institute's Research Programs Administrator, at (612) 625-0012 or projects@msi.umn.edu. This form contains instructions which detail the allocation request process. Questions regarding the allocation process can be addressed to Barbara Opal, the Supercomputing Institute's Research Programs Administrator, at projects@msi.umn.edu or (612) 625-0012.

A group may be headed by a single principal investigator (P.I.), or it may have one P.I. and one co-P.I. The P.I. and co-P.I. should be faculty members of the University of Minnesota or other accredited institutions of higher education in the state of Minnesota. All projects with the same P.I. or same combination of P.I. and co-P.I. are treated as a single project for administrative convenience.

A Supercomputing Resource Allocation project is a research project that has obtained a peer-reviewed allocation of supercomputing resources. These resource allocations can be used on any or all of the core resources.

Supercomputing Institute resource allocations are made to a given project for a given six-month period (i.e., January 1 to June 30 and July 1 to December 31). To obtain an allocation for a new period, a proposal must be submitted in accordance with the announced deadlines. Proposals for new allocations and renewals should ordinarily be submitted at the two semiannual deadlines (i.e., October 15 and April 15).

In cases of special need or for new faculty, proposals may be submitted at other times (late proposals), but researchers should be aware that the vast majority of available resources will be allocated to on-time proposals submitted for review at the spring and fall deadlines. In cases where special review is requested at other times, the proposal form should be accompanied by a cover letter explaining why a post- or pre-deadline funding decision is required or would facilitate the research. Such requests will be considered on an individual basis when resource availability permits, and usually such allocations, if possible, will be smaller than those made in conjunction with the regularly scheduled competitive review deadlines.

Requesting additional resources for an existing project

Allocations of additional supercomputing resources to an already established supercomputing resource project within a six-month period are made on an individual basis based upon the circumstances and the availability of resources. For more information regarding the availability of resources and the application procedures for additional resources, please contact Barbara Opal, the Supercomputing Institute's Research Programs Administrator, at (612) 625-0012 or projects@msi.umn.edu.

Adding a new user to an existing project

New users or group members can be added to an already established supercomputing research project (i.e., a research project that has already received a peer-reviewed resource allocation for the period in question) by having the Principal Investigator complete the new user form or by providing the following information to:
accounts@msi.umn.edu
  1. name of principal investigator (and, if applicable, co-principal investigator)
  2. name of new user or new group member
  3. mailing address of new user or new group member
  4. email of new user or new group member
  5. telephone number of new user or new group member
  6. reporting code of new user or new group member

Please indicate whether the new person should be issued an account on the IBM (SP or Power4), Netfinity Linux Cluster, and/or SGI Altix as well as being added to your research group. If appropriate, a person may be a member of your research group for your Supercomputing Institute project without having an account. However, if a person wishes to log in, they should have their own account.

Also, please let us know if the existing title and/or abstract of this project needs to be changed.

Reporting requirements

The Supercomputing Institute looks forward to seeing the results of your work. We request that all research reports and preprints of work supported in whole or in part by this allocation be submitted to the Supercomputing Institute to be included in the UMSI Research Report Series. Please submit one preprint of all research reports and reprints to the Research Reports Coordinator, Supercomputing Institute, 599 Walter, 117 Pleasant Street S.E., Minneapolis, MN 55455 (or campus mail). We encourage you to submit your papers electronically. Questions regarding electronic submission should be addressed to the reports coordinator at submissions@msi.umn.edu or (612) 624-0528. The Supercomputing Institute should be acknowledged in such publications in the byline, the acknowledgments, or both. We also would appreciate your sending us material suitable for the Supercomputing Institute Research Bulletin.
